Pool Decking Materials Compared

Decking material choice is mostly a tradeoff between upfront cost, heat underfoot, and how much repair work it needs down the line. Riverstone and First Colony both require architectural control committee approval for pool and backyard plans, including review of fencing and setbacks relative to the deed restrictions, which is handled during the design phase.

Concrete and Pavers

Stamped/textured concrete is the most budget-friendly option and can be finished in a range of patterns and colors, but it is a single poured slab, which means a crack anywhere in it is visible across a larger surface and harder to repair invisibly. Pavers are individual units set in a pattern, which makes isolated repairs much easier (replace the damaged unit, not the whole deck) and gives better flexibility for future changes like adding a feature later.

Travertine and Composite

Natural travertine stays notably cooler underfoot than concrete or most pavers even in direct Houston summer sun, which is its main selling point around a pool deck, at a higher material cost than concrete or standard pavers. Wood-look composite decking is more common on raised structures (a cabana platform, a deck over an uneven grade) than flush pool coping, and handles humidity and rot resistance better than real wood, though it runs hotter underfoot than stone in direct sun.
